    1. CONot sure which part of my answer you want a source for? The PDF Reference lists all the supported font types. To follow up Rup's answer, any embedded subset font will use character codes which do not correspond to ASCII or Unicode code points. In fact most PDF documents contain text which does not use Unicode. As I maintain the Ghostscript txtwrite device for extracting usable text from PDF I can say with assurance that this is a difficult task and while its possible to get better than 80% reliability, its not possible to extract text from all PDF files. NB CIDFonts are used for Latin too.

    2. COI'm not at all clear on why you think it has a white background in PDF (which is not an image file type), the background in a PDF is unmarked which defaults to white, but that's not the same thing. As for TIFF, there is no support in GS for making the unmarked areas transparent. If you want to do that then use PNG, its the only image format for which Ghostscript sets the unmarked area to transparent. Bear in mind that the PostScript standard requires that the page be erased (to white by default) before printing, so this is rather expected behaviour.

    3. COReplying to comment one I did say that I had tried several other PDF consumers as well as Acrobat and they too can handle this file correctly. I am not relying on Acrobat. FWIW I've been working on rendering PDF files since version 1.0 of the spec, about 15 years now.
