    1. COThat references MT4J, a Sun tech talk in which they build a multi-touch input device (seriously?) and don't give any indication of how they got the events into Java, and pointers to sparsh-ui, which is a separate server process that you can connect to. This all seems like much more work to integrate than is reasonable, given the pervasive nature of multi-touch interfaces, but perhaps it really is the state of the art. Is Java on the desktop dead? How could it not already be handling multi-touch events? I guess I'll go start digging into sparsh...

    2. COThe flash is very quick, and I suspect (though have no evidence of this) that many/most users aren't even aware of that hint. In most cases, the fact that you need to scroll is obvious. You are looking at a list of states, and it stops at Indiana. You are looking at your list of songs and they all start with the letter A. In my case, the user is discovering features and they are being presented in an order that only made sense to some marketing guy. It is emphatically NOT obvious that there would be more options than the 10 on the screen.

    3. COPerhaps, but this was a developer on the team who uses this thing every day. And he's one of the smartest guys you'll ever meet. The fact that HE didn't grok that items were scrolled off the list is what made me nervous. They don't even do something like have the last option only half-way on the screen.
