    <p>I'm mostly human, with some bits of titanium where titanium ought not be. I've been recreationally programming computers since the age of 12 -- professionally since the age of 21. I'm sure many Rush fans will be amused by that coincidence. I know I am. </p> <p>My passions in programming include algorithms, parsers, OO software design and architecture, foreign language concerns(i.e. script rendering, processing...etc.), internationalization, and UI/UX work. I also believe strongly in buy vs build, but only if you know your own needs well enough to do a small scale, but functionally comprehensive POC to prove the technology before adopting it.</p> <p>The bulk of my professional focus has been in doing UI development using a variety of MS tools (Visual C++, starting with 4.0, through the current .Net family of languages) The main product line I've worked on the past 9 years is a Legal Review SaaS system. It has evolved from a C++ UI + VB6 application to a nearly fully C# application in that time.</p> <p>Other accomplishments I'm proud of include: Making my own build system in .Net 1.1 while NAnt was still an infant. Taking a highly manual managerial/development status update process, modelling it and creating an intranet site including site and access maintenance features, writing a C++ R/D template parser library whose code strongly resembled EBNF while the spirit library was still in its infancy, at a former employer, training many of my peers whose skills lay with C in the fundamentals of OO and C++. </p>

    1. COI can speak from experience about the ease of entering queries into dtSearch... It's far easier than SQL server. Unfortunately plugging the results into a computer program and setting it up in a server environment are not easier than SQL server... (Of course I'm not a DB guy so that could indicate a bias in my thinking...)

COAnother -- albeit more hacky -- option is to find the proper windows messages and in the WndProc override of a derived control,*(e.g. MyGrid : DataGridView),* intercept those and based on the mouse position, selected row count...etc, either let the default processing happen or provide custom handling... The up side is no flash as the selected rows don't get wiped out then restored. . . The down side is much more complicated code to maintain.

    3. CO@BFree: His reference to "loaded every time" likely refers to the forms *Load* event or *OnLoad* override where it's typical to put initialization code, such as populating checkboxes. Unless he also wants to exclude keyboard interaction from triggering his logic, the only answer to date should work for him...

A row detail

Detail views are divided into sections. All the information in the data section comes from columns in the selected row. The other sections display data from other, related rows.

Related data can be related in a to-one or a to-many fashion. Captions of data related in a to-many fashion link to a list view showing a filtered view of the table.

Try moving around until you find a non-empty to-many entry and click on the label to get to one. You can move back to the root by clicking on the database name in the header.
