Suppose I were to develop an implementation of C that runs in Windows, and causes an exception to be raised when an unsigned-to-signed conversion results in a value that can't be represented in the new type. What now, huh? radioflash: Don't blame me for your inability to ask specific questions. Let us consider the historic need for a C standard. The C standard provides infinite guarantees regarding portability on all systems that implement C today *and in the unimaginably distant future*.

    2. COYes, fgets and sscanf will work that way. Be aware that the %s format specifier tells sscanf to copy a *word* (eg. zero or more non-whitespace characters up to the first whitespace). What happens to the rest of your fgets'd line? This is one way your second post differs from your first.

    3. COUndefined behaviour... Might work, might silently fail and introduce buffer overflow vulnerabilities that allow mischievous attacks on your network. Might cause nuclear missiles to be launched, if this code is in control of such a system. Undefined means the compiler is free to produce code that is unbound by the constraints of the C standard.
