    1. COThere's a code-review site on teh Stack Exchange, while it's a really simple program, several of the answers below discuss the separation of responsibility which would be a good addition to your project. I think my answer will sooth your angry professor's qualm but you could go there and ask about the best way to separate these behaviours to learn some better Software Engineering practices. http://codereview.stackexchange.com/

    2. CO@JeroenVannevel Sorry, but I'm afraid I disagree. total() seems so intuitive in behaviour I don't know if I'd read that JavaDoc and I can say with a great deal of certainty that a significant portion of my co-workers couldn't be trusted to. It's a convention that's unnecessary and there are more intuitive solutions that don't require future developers to be aware of a convention. As such I'd argue that's not an acceptable solution and if it were to cross my desk in a code-review I'd mandate correction because it could have potentially "dangerous" side-effects.

    3. COUltimately it seems like your background is the bigger problem. I've got the same issue you do, where messing with the height too much causes the background to break. I don't know what the issue is offhand since I typically prefer solid colors to images. I'd play around there though, you may be able to remove the "hidden" and size contraints entirely if you can get it to play nice.
