    <p>Imagine the following scenario:</p> <ul> <li>Activity A has a local variable <code>state</code> and implements <code>onSaveInstanceState()</code> to save it. It has code to restore it if the Bundle passed to <code>onCreate()</code> or <code>onRestoreInstanceState()</code> has it.</li> <li>Activity stack is A -> B -> C.</li> <li>A got Garbage Collected by the OS due to low resources.</li> <li>From C, I request A to be brought forward by a combination of <code>FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP</code> and <code>FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP</code>.</li> </ul> <p><a href="http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Intent.html#FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP" rel="nofollow">The docs</a> say that this flag combo causes the requested activity not to be restarted. <code>onNewIntent()</code> should be called instead on the existing instance.</p> <p>However, A obviously needs to be restarted due to the GC.</p> <p><strong>My question is: will somehow the variable <code>state</code> be restored?</strong></p> <p>I can see the following ways for it to happen:</p> <ul> <li><code>onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState)</code> - this is fairly certain to get called, but is the Bundle the one saved in <code>onSaveInstanceState()</code> during GC?</li> <li><code>onRestoreInstanceState(Bundle savedInstanceState)</code> - does it get called?</li> </ul> <p>Thanks!</p>

    1. CONote to other potential answer-ers -- the OP is mostly interested in knowing if `onRestoreInstanceState()` will be called. Personally, I'm not certain -- I'm fairly sure `onCreate()` will be called instead of `onNewIntent()`, but that's about it.

    2. CO@CommonsWare: Edited the question to make it more clear. I also realized that perhaps the Bundle passed to onCreate() may contain the state, so I'm asking about it too. Thanks again!

    3. COThe `Bundle` passed to `onCreate()` is either `null` or the instance state -- in the latter case, it's the same `Bundle` that will be passed to `onRestoreInstanceState()`. The question is whether or not it will be `null` for your scenario, and I simply don't know.
