    <p>I'm using the following LINQ to SQL query on a SQL Server Compact DB ...</p> <pre><code>from article in context.OutboundArticles where !article.IsDeleted select article </code></pre> <p>... which generates the following SQL:</p> <pre><code>SELECT [t0].[Id], [t0].[Text], [t0].[IsDeleted] FROM [OutboundArticle] AS [t0] WHERE NOT ([t0].[IsDeleted] = 1) </code></pre> <p>This would be perfectly fine if it weren't for the fact that there's an index on the IsDeleted column and SQL Server Compact will not use the index unless the SQL looks like this:</p> <pre><code>SELECT [t0].[Id], [t0].[Text], [t0].[IsDeleted] FROM [OutboundArticle] AS [t0] WHERE [t0].[IsDeleted] = CONVERT(BIT, 0) </code></pre> <p>So the question is: How do I convince LINQ to SQL to generate the "CONVERT(BIT, 0)"? I've already tried the following ...</p> <pre><code>from article in context.OutboundArticles where article.IsDeleted == Convert.ToBoolean(0) select article </code></pre> <p>... but the generated SQL looks the same.</p>

    1. COIf the index use is crucial (and I assume it is,) you might just have to issue the SQL directly via `SqlCommand`. LINQ-to-SQL's SQL generation isn't really customizable, and they seem to have decided that checking a boolean for `false` is done a certain way. Alternatively, if you could update the table structure, you could probably change IsDeleted to IsAlive and then test for `true`, which would likely generate SQL that would utilize the index.

CO@dlev: This query should at some point also run on Windows Phone 7.1 and there I can't send SQL to the DB.Testing for true will produce WHERE [t0].[IsAlive] = 1, but SSC will still not use the index. It really does require WHERE [t0].[IsAlive] = CONVERT(BIT, 1), I've just verified that with Management Studio.
