    <p><a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/rcs/" rel="nofollow">RCS</a> is a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revision_control" rel="nofollow">revision control</a> system allowing programmers to log updates to files and to review and resolve version conflicts. RCS allows a person to determine exactly which lines changed on newer revisions, and to revert some or all of the changes if necessary. It functions by keeping change data about the source code files that the programmer or programmers are manipulating. </p> <p>Having been created in the early 1980s, support for RCS has waned in favor of tools like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concurrent_Versions_System" rel="nofollow">CVS</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Subversion" rel="nofollow">Subversion</a> (SVN) and, to a larger extent, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_revision_control" rel="nofollow">distributed</a> revision systems such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Git_%28software%29" rel="nofollow">Git</a> and <a href="http://mercurial.selenic.com/" rel="nofollow">Mercurial</a> (hg).
