Dialogs typically behave this way on Android, for example.</p> <p>If you have existing users, and you have established communications with them (newsletter, support Google Group, etc.), I'd poll them and see what they think. In the end, it is what your users want that matters most.</p> <p>In a pinch, make it configurable. Ideally, for something like this, there is One True Right Answer, and therefore configurability would be pointless. However, if your poll indicates a split vote, and in the absence of Android platform UX guidelines, a setting might be the right solution for you.</p> <hr> <p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> I wrote a <a href="http://commonsware.com/blog/2011/02/15/principle-least-profanity.html" rel="noreferrer">blog post</a> about this issue, as I think it is reasonably important and worth a bit more prose.</p>

    1. COGood blog post. I'm in total agreement with you. I like your ideas that back/home/etc always saves, but doesn't always overwrite the original document. That for a complex document like a spreadsheet, you save a draft, so when the user re-enters the activity, they keep editing from where they left off, but the user can later choose to permanently save or discard their changes.

    2. COThanks for your thoughtful answer and blog post. Unfortunately it looks like there is no definitive answer; everyone is just doing their own thing. For now I am not going to change anything, but I don't feel like I am done thinking about it yet. Have you thought about discussing this in one of your (excellent) books?

A row detail

Detail views are divided into sections. All the information in the data section comes from columns in the selected row. The other sections display data from other, related rows.

Related data can be related in a to-one or a to-many fashion. Captions of data related in a to-many fashion link to a list view showing a filtered view of the table.

Try moving around until you find a non-empty to-many entry and click on the label to get to one. You can move back to the root by clicking on the database name in the header.
