    1. COThe single character `|` is a bitwise operation. You're right that it doesn't short-circuit, and it will do what you want in this case, but yuck.

    2. COWrong, the `|` and `&` operators are both bitwise and logical, depending on the operands, so it's perfectly legal to use those for logical operations as well. And yes, neither is short-circuiting. For documentation, check http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6a71f45d(VS.71).aspx. If they had been bitwise only, the expression wouldn't have compiled, because there's no auto-conversion to bool, so the if statement would be `if (int) { }`
