The <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ya5y69ds.aspx" rel="noreferrer">list of built-in types in C#</a> is quite short and not very likely to change, so I think having a dictionary or a big <code>switch</code> statement to map these shouldn't be difficult to maintain.
