Thus it is no longer necessary to install third-party software to achieve this.</p> <hr> <p>Here's my attempt at a comprehensive, visual walk-through answer (with links) of how to achieve this using <a href="https://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/seil.html.en" rel="noreferrer">Seil</a> (formerly known as <code>PCKeyboardHack</code>).</p> <ol> <li>First, go into the <strong>System Preferences</strong>, choose <strong>Keyboard</strong>, then the <strong>Keyboard Tab</strong> (first tab), and click <strong>Modifier Keys</strong>:</li> </ol> <p><img src="https://i.stack.imgur.com/Mx67Z.png" alt="Step 1"></p> <p>In the popup dialog set <strong>Caps Lock Key</strong> to <code>No Action</code>:</p> <p><img src="https://i.stack.imgur.com/ac7zb.png" alt="choose no action"></p> <p>2) Now, <a href="https://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/seil.html.en" rel="noreferrer">click here to download <strong>Seil</strong></a> and install it:</p> <p><img src="https://puu.sh/9Bufd/616b2ffb0d.png" /></p> <p>3) After the installation you will have a new Application installed ( Mountain Lion and newer ) and if you are on an older OS you may have to check for a new System Preferences pane:</p> <p><img src="https://i.stack.imgur.com/7L3U2.png" alt="open seil or the preference pane"></p> <p>4) Check the box that says "Change Caps Lock" and enter "53" as the code for the escape key:</p> <p><img src="https://i.stack.imgur.com/ZqBe1.png" alt="set the keyboard code"></p> <p><strong>And you're done!</strong> If it doesn't work immediately, you may need to restart your machine.</p> <h2>Impressed? Want More Control?</h2> <p>You may also want to check out <a href="https://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/" rel="noreferrer">KeyRemap4MacBook</a> which is actually the flagship keyboard remapping tool from <code>pqrs.org</code> - it's also free.</p> <p>If you like these tools you can <a href="https://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/donation.html.en" rel="noreferrer">make a donation</a>. I have no affiliation with them but I've been using these tools for a long time and have to say the guys over there have been doing an excellent job maintaining these, adding features and fixing bugs.</p> <p>Here's a screenshot to show a few of the (hundreds of) pre-selectable options:</p> <p><img src="https://i.stack.imgur.com/fMsmp.png" width="600" height="588" alt="Picture 1.png" /></p> <p>PQRS also has a great utility called <a href="https://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/noejectdelay.html.en" rel="noreferrer">NoEjectDelay</a> that you can use in combination with <a href="https://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/" rel="noreferrer">KeyRemap4MacBook</a> for reprogramming the Eject key. After a little tweaking I have mine set to toggle the AirPort Wifi.</p> <p>These utilities offer unlimited flexibility when remapping the Mac keyboard. Have fun!</p>
