If you are searching for a pure jQuery solution, <a href="https://stackoverflow.com/questions/166221/how-can-i-upload-files-asynchronously-with-jquery">start here</a>. There is no overall jQuery solution for all browser. So you have to use a plugin. I am using <a href="http://www.dropzonejs.com/" rel="noreferrer">dropzone.js</a>, which have an easy fallback for older browsers. Which plugin you prefer depends on your needs. There are a lot of good comparing post out there, like <a href="http://tekbrand.com/jquery/10-best-jquery-file-upload-plugins" rel="noreferrer">this</a>, <a href="http://blog.insicdesigns.com/2010/02/10-best-ajax-file-uploader-for-your-web-application/" rel="noreferrer">this</a> or <a href="http://www.bestfreewebresources.com/2011/11/20-awesome-jquery-file-uploader-plugins.html" rel="noreferrer">this</a>. </p> <p>From the <a href="http://jquery.malsup.com/form/" rel="noreferrer">examples</a>:</p> <p><strong>jQuery:</strong></p> <pre><code>$(function() { var bar = $('.bar'); var percent = $('.percent'); var status = $('#status'); $('form').ajaxForm({ beforeSend: function() { status.empty(); var percentVal = '0%'; bar.width(percentVal); percent.html(percentVal); }, uploadProgress: function(event, position, total, percentComplete) { var percentVal = percentComplete + '%'; bar.width(percentVal); percent.html(percentVal); }, complete: function(xhr) { status.html(xhr.responseText); } }); }); </code></pre> <p><strong>html:</strong></p> <pre><code>&lt;form action="file-echo2.php" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data"&gt; &lt;input type="file" name="myfile"&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;input type="submit" value="Upload File to Server"&gt; &lt;/form&gt; &lt;div class="progress"&gt; &lt;div class="bar"&gt;&lt;/div &gt; &lt;div class="percent"&gt;0%&lt;/div &gt; &lt;/div&gt; &lt;div id="status"&gt;&lt;/div&gt; </code></pre> <p>you have to style the progressbar with css...</p>
